Cultural competency
check-up for Mental health and substance abuse providers:

Is your organization Culturally Competent in it’s interactions with gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, questioning and intersex clients (GLBTQI)?

Some questions to consider:

Ø Do you have a welcoming environment for GLBTQI clients?

Ø How do the consumers/clients know that it is a safe place for them to disclose their orientation?

Ø Are your intake forms using inclusive language?

Ø Is the language in your forms gender neutral?

Ø When talking about sexual or relationship partners, does the staff assume heterosexuality?

Ø If you are unsure about how to answer the above questions,

do you know where to start?

We can provide your organization with technical assistance on any GLBTQI cultural competence issues.

MLI has collaborated with Northeast Communities Against Substance Abuse (NECASA), under a grant from the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) to provide free technical assistance to any DMHAS-funded and state-operated mental health and substance abuse providers of treatment and prevention services. If your organization receives funding from the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services you are contractually required to create and implement effective cultural competency plans across your organization and its programs. If you are not a DMHAS-funded organization, and are interested in receiving information or a referral on these issues, please feel free to contact us.
